Wilful

Heart of fire and soul aglow,

Nothing’s going to stop you, no.

Strong as iron and loath to move,

It’s like you’ve got a point to prove.

Never wrong and always right,

Yet somehow still, a great delight.

Wee blonde curls and eyes of green,

Of your own kingdom, a tiny Queen.

Charming to everyone you ever meet,

Every stranger you stop to greet.

Your humour and charisma brings,

Gifts of money and shiny things.

Sweet as pie until you’re not,

You turn in a second from cool to hot.

“I’m not in this family anymore!”

You scream out as you slam the door.

Soon you’re back. You’re only four.

You don’t want to be cold anymore.

Still raging but holding it in,

While my patience is wearing thin.

If I survive you, my headstrong girl.

I’m sure I’ll see you change the world.

So I will try to keep you wild,

It’s my job, my precious child.

And as for your job, there’s only one.

Never stop being wilful.
